Types of Mail and How to Choose

Choosing the right type of mail service for your needs can save you time and money. Understanding the different types of mail services offered by the United States Postal Service can help you make a wise decision.

There are six different mail services offered by the USPS. Each has different prices and service levels. Selecting the right service for your mailing needs can help you save money and ensure that your mail arrives on time.

The most common type of mail is First Class Mail. The United States Postal Service (USPS) gives first class mail priority over standard mail. First class mail offers several benefits, including free mail forwarding and free return services.

First class mail is the fastest method for personal communications, such as letters and postcards. However, it is not as fast as Priority Mail or overnight mail. It is slower and charges on the weight of your mail. The USPS also provides free packaging.

Standard mail is often referred to as bulk mail. It can include printed marketing pieces, but it does not offer free automatic returns. It also has a minimum requirement of 50 pounds. It must be presorted and CASS certified. It will typically be delivered in two to three days in local areas. However, the USPS does not guarantee delivery within this time frame.

Priority Mail is the slowest method of mail, but it provides guaranteed delivery dates. Priority Mail is not a good choice for time-sensitive mail. Its weight limit is 70 pounds. However, it is often considered the best value for ecommerce shipping.
